Construction of chaals

HIMCON along with its partner organization HSS and the 37 women self help groups organized to construct 64 Chaals or small ponds / recharge pits through participative community efforts in the project area. These percolation tanks or recharge pits have been constructed near the plantation sites and it is being observed that this has helped in creating a good moisture regime in the region there by helping the saplings planted under various programs. The table given below explains the details of sixty four small ponds constructed in different villages with the support of various self help groups.

Safe drinking water and revival of old water harvesting structures

HIMCON has also taken up very useful construction, repair and maintenance tasks of water harvesting tanks and bio filters in project villages with the support of Himalaya Resources, Himalaya Seva Sangh, Arghyam and village communities of the Kimsar region. We were able to work in the Talla Banash, Aamkatal, Ramjiwala, Dharkot, Marora villages of our project villages.

The Gram Panchayats and the women SHG’s were actively involved in the repair, maintenance and construction of these water harvesting structures. Right from problem identification to construction of solutions and implementing it on the ground full transparency and participation was organized. This has given the communities a much needed confidence to be able to do things in a collective manner.

Roof Water Harvesting (Ferro-Cement tanks)

Roof-top rainwater harvesting technology was introduced by HIMCON with the support of Aquamall in the Ramjiwala village of Kimsar region which has been facing acute water shortage throughout the year. The Aquamall officials in the initial phase of their visits identified along with the HIMCON field workers this as the major problem and planned to construct Ferro-cement tanks for roof water harvesting as an important intervention to resolve the water crises of Ramjiwala village. Twelve roof water harvesting ferro-cement tanks have been constructed in the village.

Compost Pit

Two compost pits were also constructed under this program. Smt. Maya Devi and Smt. Sadhana Devi were selected from the Jai Shree Ram Self Help Group and they also assisted in the construction of these compost pits. We are hoping that this intervention will help the farmers get better quality organic compost for their farm lands which will be easier to carry and improve the hygienic conditions around the households.
